Plasticizer

Plasticizers are chemicals that make fabrics softer and more elastic. They are mainly used in plastic products to adapt their technical properties to the intended application.

The addition of plasticizers causes plastics to swell. When the volatile plasticizer components evaporate or are dissolved, the base material loses volume.

It also becomes harder, more brittle and can develop cracks. So-called phthalates are used particularly frequently as plasticizers. These are compounds of phthalic acid with various alcohols.

#1 Definition of plasticizer

Plasticizers are chemical substances that primarily influence the hardness and flexibility of fabrics. As the plasticizer content increases, the hardness decreases and the elasticity increases.

Plasticizers outgas easily or migrate into contact media such as fats and oils.

#2 Importance of plasticizers

In addition to the production of thermosets, rubber processing also relies on plasticizers. They are used as additives in material compounds.

In sealing technology, components with a low plasticizer content are generally preferred, as their technical properties offer superior long-term stability.
