Dynamic applications
#1 What is meant by a dynamic application?
In a dynamic application, the O-ring seal moves. In a static application, the O-ring seal does not move.
The type of movement can also be divided into rotational and translational movements.
Rotatory: Rotating movement (example: shaft)
Translational: Back and forth movement (example: hydraulic cylinder)
Important: When designing a dynamic O-ring, the higher load must be taken into account. As the O-ring is constantly in motion, it is exposed to significantly higher friction.
#2 How can the service life of a dynamically installed O-ring be extended?
1. Due to the higher friction, the compression should be slightly lower than with a static seal. (approx. 5-10%)
2. Choose a material that generally does not need to be pressed so hard. (E.G. FFKM)
3. In dynamic applications, the O-ring should always be generously lubricated during assembly.
4. Use materials that naturally do not adhere well to other materials. Therefore, avoid materials such as VMQ (silicone).
