Density

As a physical quantity, density is used in the application area of O-rings primarily to differentiate between different materials. The basic elastomers used to manufacture sealing materials have characteristic differences in their density.

Density refers exclusively to the relationship between the mass and volume of a body. It is therefore independent of form. For this reason, density offers an effective approach for analyzing sealing elements as finished parts.

#1 Definition density

Density is a shape-independent physical quantity. It describes the relationship between the mass and volume of a body. As a material constant, density is a characteristic feature of every material.

#2 Meaning of density

The density of O-rings can be reliably determined by simple means and used to identify the material used in incoming goods, for example.

The density is also suitable for further investigations. In this way, finer-grained differences can reveal smaller fluctuations in the material composition. This means that determining the density is also a means of quality control.
