Compression molding is a manufacturing process that is mainly used for plastics processing. It is primarily used to produce components with a larger surface area and is suitable for simple workpiece geometries.
During compression molding, a pre-formed mass is introduced into the tool. This is closed and held shut so that the mass takes shape. The tool can also be subjected to heat to facilitate forming.
Compression molding can be distinguished from the injection molding process, which is also very common in the plastics industry, by the fact that the mold is open during filling. During injection molding, the mold must be closed as molten material is injected.
