Filler
Fillers is a category name for substances that are contained in a finished product in addition to the base material. They reduce the concentration of the usually more expensive base material in the end product.
In sealing technology, fillers are primarily carbon blacks, which are contained in the material mixture alongside the base elastomer and additives.
Fillers are added to the mixture during compounding. Together with other additives in significantly lower concentrations, they are used to adjust certain physical material properties such as
- Hardness
- Tensile strength
- Elongation at break
- Abrasion resistance

Fillers are used as an additive to a base material in the manufacture of products from all areas of application. Together with the other ingredients, they are used to achieve objectives in terms of manufacturability, applicability or cost.
#2 Importance of fillers
The preferred filler in O-ring production is carbon black. In addition to influencing the technical properties, the filler is also responsible for the general black coloration of O-rings. Silicic acids and silicates are used as fillers for light-colored sealing elements.
