Impact vulcanization is a process for manufacturing finished parts from rubber. Extruded semi-finished products are used as the starting material. They usually have a round cross-section.
These round cords are cut to length and then joined together at the ends. The permanent bond is created by an adhesive mixture which, under the effect of pressure and heat, cross-links the molecules (vulcanization) at the joint. Alternative processes for this area of application are endless vulcanization and (but largely detached) bonding.
#1 Definition of impact vulcanization
Impact vulcanization is a manufacturing process in which continuous material is joined together under pressure and heat to form a circular sealing element.
#2 Significance of impact vulcanization
Impact vulcanization is a particularly flexible manufacturing process for O-rings. Because no specific tools are required for impact vulcanization, the process is suitable for the production of smaller quantities.
It is mainly used for sealing elements in special sizes. The seam weakens the mechanical load-bearing capacity of impact-vulcanized sealing elements. At the same time, the dimensional accuracy in the joint area is impaired.
