Cord strength is a term used in the application of O-rings as a sealing element. O-rings have a circular cross-section, the diameter of which is typically referred to as the cord thickness.
The round cross-section distinguishes O-rings from other common sealing elements with a rectangular cross-section (flat gaskets). Together with the inside diameter, the cord thickness serves as a complete geometric description of an O-ring.
The format “inner diameter x cord thickness” is a common ordering specification for standard O-rings.
#1 Definition of cord thickness
The cord thickness (rarely also cord diameter) is the diameter of the round cross-section of O-rings. Together with the inside diameter, the cord thickness defines the sealing-relevant dimensions of these sealing elements.
#2 Significance of the cord thickness
When using O-rings, the interplay of cord thickness, inner diameter and installation groove is crucial for reliable function. Many conclusions can be drawn from the line strength.
For example, an O-ring becomes more flexible when the cord thickness is smaller in relation to the inner diameter. In the installation position, the cross-section of the O-ring is elastically deformed so that it assumes an elliptical cross-section.
