Groove depth

The groove depth indicates the distance between the upper groove edge and the bottom of the groove. Together with the width of the groove, the depth defines the geometry of a rectangular groove. The groove depth is also part of the dimensioning for other groove shapes such as trapezoidal grooves or T-slots.

In general, the depth of the groove determines which components, connecting elements or seals can be accommodated in the groove.

The groove depth is the measure for the depth of the groove. It is defined as the distance between the top edge of the groove and the bottom of the groove.

#2 Meaning of the groove depth

Grooves serve as installation space for sealing elements such as O-rings. They are inserted into the groove and then pressed between the two sealing surfaces to prevent the fabric from passing through. The base of the groove forms one of the sealing surfaces.

The groove depth thus determines how much the cross-section of the O-ring is deformed between the two surfaces when screwed together.
