O-RING CompoundS
In sealing technology, the term compound stands for the mixture of one or more basic elastomers with additional ingredients. Together, the mixture components result in a finished O-ring material with characteristic technical properties in terms of media resistance, temperature suitability or mechanical load-bearing capacity.
In addition to one or more elastomers, a compound contains the following additives, among others:
- Anti-ageing agent
- Plasticizer
- Color pigments
- Fillers
- Vulcanizing agent
#1 Definition Compound
In sealing technology, compounds are a mixture of the base material rubber with numerous other additives. These ingredients, each with a defined mixing ratio, are used to set the desired property profile.
Compounds are the starting material for the production of finished sealing elements, which is usually done by vulcanization in a mould.
#2 Importance of compounds
Modern O-ring compounds have a complex composition with many ingredients. Specific additives not only improve the durability of the sealing elements in use. The right choice of compound also optimizes manufacturability and shelf life.
