Fracture elongation
The elongation at break is a measure of the deformation capacity of a material. The characteristic value indicates the permanent deformation of a sample after it has broken. To determine this, a tensile test is carried out in which the initial gauge length and the length after fracture are compared.
The elongation at break is usually given as a percentage. Like hardness or elasticity, elongation at break is one of the mechanical properties of materials and bodies.
#1 Definition of elongation at break
#2 Meaning of the elongation at break
In the field of sealing technology, characteristic values determined in the tensile test play an important role in the assessment of sealing materials and finished parts. Together with the tensile strength, the elongation at break indicates how a sample reacts to tensile stress.
The tensile load capacity is used, for example, to evaluate assembly situations in which sealing elements often have to be stretched.
