Sealing elements can be pressed in two directions between the sealing surfaces. In addition to the axial seal, where the deformation force acts in the direction of installation, there is also the radial seal.
Axial seals are used for static applications where the surfaces to be sealed do not move regularly relative to each other. Axial grooves serve as installation space. The axial seal is used particularly frequently on flange screw connections on pipelines or for inspection openings.
#1 Definition axial seal
Axial seal is the designation for the installation type of a sealing element. The axial seal is used on stationary machine parts and is characterized by the fact that the sealing element is elastically deformed in the axial direction (compression).
#2 Applications of axial seals
Axial seals are very common in practice. In addition to flat gaskets, O-rings with a round cross-section are also used as sealing elements.
When designing the installation space, particular attention must be paid to the pressure conditions. Depending on the expected direction of pressure, the sealing element must be in contact with the inner edge or the outer edge of the groove.
