Additives

Additives are substances added to the elastomer compound of an O-ring. They control properties such as cross-linking, resistance, processability, and aging behavior without replacing the base material.

What are additives?

An O-ring is not made of pure polymer, but rather of a carefully formulated mixture known as a compound. Additives are the functional components of this mixture. These include cross-linking agents, which transform the material from a plastic to an elastic state; fillers, which influence hardness and mechanical strength; as well as anti-aging agents and processing aids. Each additive fulfills a specific function. It is only through their interaction that the properties an O-ring exhibits in use are achieved.

Why Additives Are Important for O-Rings

The selection and dosage of additives play a decisive role in determining the seal’s subsequent performance. They influence temperature resistance, chemical resistance, hardness, and service life. Two O-rings made from the same base polymer can differ significantly due to different additives. For applications with approval requirements, the formulation is particularly important, as only approved components may be used. For our own brand, ECOLAST, made from FFKM, the blends are tailored to achieve defined temperature and approval profiles depending on the type.
