Blooming effect

Blooming describes an efflorescence that can occur on a wide variety of materials. In addition to glass and concrete, however, plastics are particularly affected by this effect.

Efflorescence is caused by certain components of the material mixture coming to the surface through chemical migration. In the field of plastics, the migration of plasticizers to the surface or into surrounding materials is primarily considered.

The blooming effect can have a negative impact on the material properties of the affected workpiece, but also on objects that come into contact with it. This is usually due to incorrect dosing of material components, the use of incompatible components or unsuitable storage.

#1 Definition Blooming effect

Blooming is an effect that occurs when certain components of a material mixture come to the surface of the component and become visible there as efflorescence. The blooming effect causes visual and functional deviations.

#2 Blooming effect in sealing technology

Sealing materials are complex mixtures with many additives such as plasticizers and anti-ageing agents. If blooming occurs, the technical properties set with the blooming additives are lost.
