Tensile test

The tensile test is a test method in which the reaction of a material to a tensile load is determined.

The tensile test can be used to determine several mechanical characteristics of the material:

  • Yield strength
  • Tensile strength
  • Elongation at break

For a tensile test, a standardized specimen is clamped in a material testing machine and then stretched until it breaks. The tensile load increases slowly and evenly, so that the acting force can be regarded as quasi-static. Since the tensile test ends when the specimen breaks, it is a destructive test method

#1 Definition of tensile test

The tensile test is a method for testing materials. It is used to determine mechanical material characteristics by applying tensile stress.

#2 Significance of the tensile test

The mechanical properties, which are determined by means of the tensile test, are of great importance for the assessment of sealing elements. For example, a low tensile strength may indicate processing errors or material deviations.

In general, a good result in the tensile test has a positive effect on the mountability and mechanical strength of the components.
