The tensile strength (also known as tear strength) indicates the force required to tear a material. From a technical point of view, tearing is the failure of a component as a result of a tensile force.
The force is specified in relation to the cross-sectional area of the body. As a material parameter, the tensile strength depends on the material. In connection with the tensile strength, the elongation at break (also elongation at break) is often specified.
It expresses the percentage elongation at the moment of tearing. Both characteristic values are determined by testing in accordance with DIN 53504.
