Tensile strength

The tensile strength (also known as tear strength) indicates the force required to tear a material. From a technical point of view, tearing is the failure of a component as a result of a tensile force.

The force is specified in relation to the cross-sectional area of the body. As a material parameter, the tensile strength depends on the material. In connection with the tensile strength, the elongation at break (also elongation at break) is often specified.

It expresses the percentage elongation at the moment of tearing. Both characteristic values are determined by testing in accordance with DIN 53504.

#1 Definition of tensile strength

The tensile strength expresses the tensile force required to tear a material.

#2 Tensile strength for O-rings

For O-rings, the tensile strength together with the elongation at break are among the material parameters that are included in the data sheet as standard. The tensile strength is determined by the special material formulation, so it can also vary within an elastomer.

Since O-rings are hardly ever subjected to tensile stress during operation, the tensile strength is primarily used to evaluate the assembly-related elongation.
