Tear resistance

The tear propagation resistance is mainly determined for flat films and elastomer products. The tear propagation resistance is a mechanical parameter used to describe the tearing behavior of a sample or workpiece.

A clamped test specimen is provided with an incision of a defined length. The tearing process initiated by the tensile testing machine is recorded as a force-extension diagram. It is then used to calculate the tear propagation resistance.

Depending on the material to be tested, different test specimen geometries are used.

The tear resistance is the measure of the resistance to tearing of a fabric that has already been weakened by a cut. This mechanical property is also known as notch resistance.

#2 Significance of the tear propagation resistance

Tear propagation resistance is an important technical property of sealing elements made of elastomers. The characteristic indicates how easily a body tears through completely after it has experienced an initial weakening. 

Tear propagation resistance is used to assess the suitability of materials and finished products, particularly in application scenarios subject to high mechanical stress.
