Twisting

Twisting, also known as torsion in technical terms, refers to the deformation of a body due to a moment acting around its longitudinal axis.

In addition to twisting, the resulting shape is also referred to as twisting or torsion. Together with tension (elongation), compression (compression), shear and bending, torsion forms the mechanical load types.

The distinction is made depending on the point of application and the direction of action of the force caused. In practice, shafts are the component most affected by torsional stress. They transmit rotational movements and are therefore subject to torsional forces.

#1 Definition of twisting

Twisting or torsion describes the loading of a body by a torsional moment that twists the body around its longitudinal axis.

#2 Significance of torsion in sealing technology

In sealing technology, torsion is primarily considered in connection with radially sealing O-rings. Friction occurs when the seal slides between the piston and cylinder, which can cause the O-ring to twist. This causes damage that affects the sealing effect.
