Groove width

The groove width is a dimension that indicates the distance between the two flanks of a groove. In most cases, this is a rectangular groove. The groove width is also specified for other groove geometries such as trapezoidal grooves or T-grooves.

Grooves can be found both in timber construction and in general mechanical engineering. Together with the groove width, the groove depth defines the dimensions of a groove. Both dimensions determine which components, connecting elements or seals can be accommodated in the groove.

#1 Definition of groove width

The groove width indicates the distance between the two flanks of a groove.

#2 Meaning of the groove width

In sealing technology, the groove width plays an important role in the design of O-ring dimensions and installation space. The groove width must be such that the O-ring can be inserted into the groove without being crushed.

In addition, a free space must be provided for the swelling of the O-ring. However, too much free space should also be avoided.
