Injection molding

Injection molding is one of the most widespread manufacturing processes in the world, in which non-metallic materials in particular are given a defined geometric shape in a tool.

The material is melted before it is injected under pressure into the usually heated mold. Due to the low material losses, the process has economic advantages over machining processes, especially in large-scale production. The comparatively high costs for tool production are a disadvantage.

#1 Definition injection molding

According to DIN 8580, injection molding (technically correct injection molding) is one of the manufacturing processes by primary forming.

It is mainly used in plastics processing. In injection molding, liquefied material is introduced into a permanent mold under heat and pressure. There it cools, retaining its predetermined shape.

#2 Importance of injection molding

While the injection molding of thermoplastics generally has the greatest economic significance, elastomers can also be processed using injection molding. The process is used in sealing technology for the economical production of elastic sealing elements in standard sizes.
