The groove clearance is essentially dependent on two parameters.<\/p>\n<p>While the groove width limits the available space, the cross-section and the compression (and thus the elliptical deformation) of the O-ring determine how much of this space remains free. When designing a seal, the groove width is selected so that there is sufficient groove clearance when the seal is installation space for O-rings is dimensioned.<\/p>\n<p>For many applications, for example, a groove clearance of 15 percent should be planned. This serves to ensure that the O-ring is evenly loaded by pressurized media. At the same time, the free space allows the O-ring to swell without overfilling the
