reason for the failure of an O-ring.<\/p><p>If an O-ring presses into the sealing gap, parts of the O-ring may be sheared off. In most cases, the main reason for gap extrusion is the incorrect design of the O-ring.<\/p><p><b>The 3 most important causes of gap extrusion<\/b><br \/><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">1. High system pressure<br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">2. Overfilling of the <a href=\"https:\/\/nh-oring.de\/en\/groove-o-ring-lexicon\/\"><span style=\"color: #fe5050;\">groove\u00a0<\/span><\/a><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">3. O-ring too soft (low <span style=\"color: #fe5050;\"><a style=\"color: #fe5050;\" href=\"https:\/\/nh-oring.de\/en\/shorehaerte-o-ringe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shore hardness<\/a>)<\/span><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">The damage pattern of gap extrusion is quite easy to recognize compared to other damage patterns. (See picture)<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">The result of gap extrusion is that whole pieces are &#8220;cut&#8221; from the O-ring. The higher the system pressure, the harder the O-ring should be (e.g. 90 Shore A)<br \/><b>2<\/b>. Support rings should be used if the pressure is too high<br \/><b>3<\/b>.
